Start with light and drainage
Maryland Extension emphasizes suitable light, drainage holes and a well-draining mix for herbs in containers. Those basics still matter when an amendment is added. Keep the plant's growing requirements at the center of the plan, especially if a pot moves indoors for the colder part of the year.
An herb-pot planning card
- Plant name: list each herb rather than writing only 'herbs'.
- Container: note its size, drainage and whether it sits inside a decorative outer pot.
- Growing mix: record the brand or recipe and any fertilizer already included.
- Care: note your actual light conditions and how you decide when to water.
- Amendment: record the product, label guidance and amount used, so the same approach can be reviewed later.
Make the purchase fit your kitchen garden
If you only have a few herb pots, start with the amount your planned application calls for. A larger bag is not an instruction to use more. Soily is available in 2.5, 5 and 10 lb sizes, with the same vermicompost and biochar blend. Check the dispatch and delivery timing before planning a weekend planting project.
