SOIL NOTES / A PRACTICAL GROWING GUIDE

Top-dressing potted plants with worm compost

Top-dressing means applying material at the surface of an existing pot. It can be a way to use an amendment without rebuilding the whole mix, but the plant, the pot and the product directions still determine the approach.

Check the surface before adding to it

If the pot is already full to the rim, there may be little room for another layer and watering. Look for existing mulch, crusting, exposed roots and the plant's stem. Do not cover the surface simply because a bag is open; first decide what purpose the addition will serve.

Use a measured approach

  1. Check that the plant's overall watering and drainage conditions are suitable.
  2. Use the amendment label to choose an amount appropriate to your pot.
  3. Keep material away from direct contact with stems or trunks. Oregon State's vermicompost guidance includes this point when describing top-dressing.
  4. Record the date and amount, then monitor the pot before repeating the application.

Know the limits of a surface change

A surface amendment does not replace the entire root-zone mix. If the pot needs repotting or a drainage problem needs correction, address that separately. For Soily, remember that the product is a blend of vermicompost and biochar, so a recommendation for a different material should not automatically become its application rate.
