Decide what the plant actually needs
A plant may need a different position, a watering change or fresh growing medium rather than a larger pot. Minnesota Extension recommends assessing the plant before repotting or pruning. Record the condition that led you to act, so you can tell whether the change addressed it.
Prepare a clear ingredient list
- Identify the plant and choose a potting mix suited to it.
- Check the new pot's drainage and the condition of the current roots.
- Read the mix label for fertilizer or amendments already included.
- If adding an amendment, follow its guidance and write down the amount. Avoid changing several products and the watering routine at the same time unless the plant's condition requires it.
After the move
Keep notes on watering and the plant's response in its new setup. There is no universal timetable for adding more amendment to every houseplant. Soily is sold as a vermicompost and biochar blend, not a plant-specific potting medium; keep a suitable base mix at the center of the repotting plan.
