Write down the bag before buying the bagged amendment
Record the grow bag's capacity, the crop and where it will sit. That gives you a specific project to discuss when reading product guidance. The amount of growing medium needed to fill the container is separate from the amount of an amendment you might add.
Make a care plan you can repeat
- Choose a base potting mix for containers and check whether it is already fertilized.
- Set the grow bag where water can drain and where you can inspect it easily.
- Check moisture as the weather and plant size change. Use observations rather than an unchanging watering calendar.
- Record any amendment amount and date. If you compare two bags, use the same crop, base mix and location as closely as possible.
Avoid the unlimited-root-zone assumption
Container roots rely on the water, air and nutrients available in a restricted space. Treat each grow bag as its own growing environment. Soily can be considered as a vermicompost and biochar addition, but we do not claim it replaces a complete feeding program or removes the need to monitor the container.
